RESUMO

Scientific articles published in science journals are the main means of communicating scientific information today. A scientific article as a type of publication is characterized by a specific design and content. It is defined as a special type of publication intended to convey scientific information. There are different types of scientific articles: original scientific article, review article, systematic review and meta-analysis, case report, etc. Original scientific article and how to write it is the main topic of this article. It is considered a primary scientific publication that brings research results that have not been published before and contains enough data for other researchers to assess the presented evidence, repeat the study, and critically assess the conclusions. Original scientific article usually follows the IMRaD structure, i.e., it consists of four main sections as follows: introduction, methods, results, and discussion. Each section has a different purpose and brings different part of information on the study that was conducted. Furthermore, other elements of a scientific article are presented and explained, such as a title, abstract, key words, and reference format. Hopefully useful suggestions are offered about the use of scientific language and style.

RESUMO

Medical writing and manuscript preparation are rarely taught in the context of undergraduate, graduate, or continuing medical education. As editors of a "small" medical scientific journal published in English in a non-native English-speaking (NNES) country, we hold that the knowledge of scinetific methodology and specificities of scientific reporting is a necessary precondition for a succesful scientific publication. Our experience shows that language professionals and translators whose services NNES authors use should be acquainted with the basic rules of scientific reporting. In this article we describe how each of the four layers of a manuscript -the study quality, the narrative, the scientific reporting style, and finally the language per se-can be improved.

RESUMO

We calculated the impact factor (IF) of the Croatian Medical Journal (CMJ) for the 1994-2003 period, ie, including the years before its inclusion into the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) database in 1999. There was a latency period of several years from the inclusion of the Journal in indexing databases to the IF increase. According to the ISI Journal of Citation Report, IF of the CMJ in 2001 and 2002, was 0.43 and 0.71 and journal was ranked 70 and 56, respectively, out of 107 journals under the category "Medicine, general and internal". The analysis of distribution and type of citations that contributed to the IF of the CMJ revealed that its increase mainly resulted from the increase in the number of fully independent citations and author auto-citations in journals other than CMJ. The factors that probably accounted for the IF increase were better international visibility, full-text free-of-charge online availability, and large number of international contributions, especially in some thematic issues.

RESUMO

AIM: To assess the current situation in biomedical journal publishing in Croatia, according to the journals editorial and publishing characteristics. METHOD: A survey questionnaire with 38 questions was sent to the editors-in-chief of 43 biomedical journals in Croatia. Thirty-seven journals were analyzed. RESULTS: In 2000, there were 14 general and 23 specialized biomedical journals in Croatia. Twenty-five journals received financial support from the government. Six journals were indexed in MEDLINE, with two of them also in Current Contents, 20 in other bibliographic databases, and 11 were not indexed at all. Twelve journals published articles in English, 11 in Croatian, and 14 in either English or Croatian. Only 9 journals were available on-line: 5 offered abstracts only and 4 offered full-text articles. There were more indexed than non-indexed journals that were financially supported by the government (p=0.031) and published in English or either English or Croatian (p=0.011). Indexed journals published more pages (p=0.020) and received more articles (p=0.030) per year. Five journals provided salary for the editorial staff and 4 paid the reviewers services. Median number of subscribers was 250 (range, 0-7,000) and median circulation 650 (range, 300-7,200). Finances, number and quality of articles, and problems with the review process were perceived by editors as the most important problems. CONCLUSION: Many journals had financial problems despite receiving governmental or other support. Low number/quality of articles received and inefficient review process could reflect the self-containment of Croatian medical community, which comprises around 11,000 physicians and dentists. Large ranges in circulation, number of subscribers, and number of pages published per year, as well as in indexing rates, might imply large differences among the journals in their target readership and editorial policies and performance.
